These candles have wax bodies so they are super realistic.  Note, the outdoor versions which have plastic due to potential melting.  The flame looks just like a real fire flame.  

The candles can be easily manually turned on or off,  or placed on timer. (tapers do not have timer function, however).  The timer works easily.  The time the candle is switched to timer on is the time the candle goes on every night.  The candle then automatically turns off automatically 4 hours later.  So set the candle to timer mode and let it automatically go on and off every night at the same time.
